Help a refugee learn English

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITES

If you can smile and speak English, you are qualified. Volunteer alongside some of the most resillient people in the world and make a new friend along the way.

English classes are taught by computers and allow interaction with an Encourager (you.) You don’t need to know how to teach English, just be friendly and ready to engage someone from another culture. Take a look at the schedule below. Classes are two 30-minute sessions with a 15 minute group activity in the middle. You can volunteer for just one day or multiple days.

WHAT WILL I DO?

We will introduce you to the adult student you will be helping. You will have a brief conversation usually centered around family, work and where you are each from. You will sit at a computer with the student and go through the English lesson together. Your job is to encourage them by saying "good job." Once they finish the lesson, you will record their progress on sheet of paper and help them navigate to the next lesson. After 30 min, all the students will participate in a group lesson for 15 min and then return to the computer for another computer lesson.

WHO WILL I BE HELPING?

Our classes are for refugees desiring to learn English. These students are not required to come to classes, so they come with an initiative to learn. They make great progress that will inspire you. Refugees come from Africa, Asia and the Middle-east. Some are true beginners and others are intermediate.

DO I NEED TRAINING?

No. We can train you in about 5 min. You do not need any experience in teaching the English language. We are not asking you to teach or explain English rules, simply smile... encourage... and be a friend. Download our guidelines for a quick read before you show up.

English class is a place where everyone is motivated to learn something new because their livelihood depends on it. Both the teacher and student learn from each other and the end product is a unique bond. Sarah Bloniak
