Living life with refugees, I have opportunities to show God’s love and share stories of truth while doing daily life tasks.
Carrying an overflowing basket of laundry, I heard a laugh as I walked into my apartment laundry mat. As I sat my basket down, I saw my friend from Somalia sitting on the washer waiting for her laundry to dry. She was laughing, because she knows I always wait till all my clothes are dirty before I do laundry! As she helped me load my laundry, she told me that doing laundry is her time for peace and an escape from all the noise inside her apartment. As one of the oldest in a big family, it is her job to take care of the babies, cook and clean. She says that sometimes after she puts the kids to bed, she goes outside to get peace. As we sat together she asked, “When is a time that you felt peace?” I shared my story of living in South Asia, trying to adapt to a new culture and feeling alone. I shared how I looked out at the water and felt peace, because I knew that even though things were hard, God was with me. She was very interested and started telling me about a time she felt peace. Then, I shared the story of when Jesus was sleeping in a boat in the middle of a bad storm. The waves were crashing over the boat and His friends were scared for their lives. When they woke Jesus, He said “Peace, be still!” and the stormed stopped and the sea was calm and peaceful. She was amazed! Just then, her brother came into the laundry mat and she had to go home.
I love to intersect people’s lives with Truth. People are always looking for hope, grace, peace, provision and protection. I have so many stories to share.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 ESV
Pray with me as the I share God’s Word among unreached people. Pray that one story would lead to another and that the opportunity to share God’s whole story among this unreached people group would come soon.
