“Lord, let them ask.” That was my prayer for a Syrian family that my ministry partner and I were about to visit. Every time we visit, we sit together, have tea and learn from each other. I’ve been visiting this family every week for the past several months, and my time with them is often the highlight of my week. We have shared Bible stories with this family, and they always receive the stories with gratitude. But it can be difficult to know if they’re just being polite, or if they’re really listening and desiring these Jesus stories that we tell them.
As we prayed before going over there, the Lord put it on my heart to pray for something really specific – to pray for them to ask us to retell a story that we’ve told before. So, that’s what I prayed for. While on the visit, we were sitting around drinking tea when the eldest daughter asked us if we could tell her the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 again. Then, her father chimed in and asked if we could tell the story of Jesus walking on the water. The eldest son added in his request too, saying that he would like to hear about how Jesus died!!
We looked at one another with joy, knowing that God was answering our prayer. That was such an encouragement, because all that we can do is be faithful to share the stories. Only God can soften a heart to desire stories about Jesus, and only God can bring transformation through those stories. God’s answer to our prayer gave us a deeper glimpse into His faithfulness and the work that He’s doing in the lives of this family. All I can say is, “Thank you, Lord!!”
“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55: 10-11
