Severe Humanitarian Crisis Remains Ongoing in Myanmar
You may remember seeing news coverage in March, just a couple of short months ago, about the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that rocked much of central and northeastern Myanmar. AP News reports that the latest data from this natural disaster has reached 3,740 deaths and just over 5,000 injuries. All of this stacks up to create a truly terrible situation for many of Myanmar’s natives, as the nation still remains torn in two by civil war resulting from a political coup in 2021. AP also reports that conflict within the country has displaced an estimated 3.5 million people.
Adequate Shelter in Short Supply
An official from the Myanmar Rescue Federation has indicated that about half of the disaster victims are currently residing in temporary shelter tents built on the same land where their homes once stood. These living conditions become especially problematic as the summer approaches, which is monsoon season for much of the region. Weak framework and leaky covers make the people living in these temporary housing tents extremely vulnerable to the elements, which include heavy downpours and strong winds. Flash flooding and the dangers that go along with it are also a major concern for those without a stable living structure in the coming months.
Healthcare Access Limited
Additional reports from health news sources like Health Policy Watch and PHR indicate that the healthcare services in Myanmar are struggling greatly due to both the ongoing war and the earthquake, which completely destroyed three hospitals. Accusations have been made against the military junta which is allegedly targeting medical personnel and facilities, making medical services tougher to provide. This, coupled with the lack of reliable food, water and shelter, place Burmese people at great risk of a serious health epidemic.
How You Can Help
As always, we are asking for urgent prayer for our friends and teammates in Myanmar, and for the region as a whole. Ask God to bring about peace in the region, creating safer living conditions and allowing the country to begin to rebuild. Pray for safety from extreme weather conditions and illness for those living in inadequate, temporary living structures. Lastly, pray for the local church, including GoTEN teammates, working locally to be a light during a dark time.
Resources across the country remain spread thin, and this affects local ministry work as well. If you feel led to give, consider supporting our team of local workers in Myanmar!
