Hamza’s Story: The Power of a “Yes”
A single word can change everything.
For Hamza, a two-year-old boy from Afghanistan, that word was "Yes." A simple, three-letter word that, for the first time, bridged the gap between where he came from and where he's going. Hamza’s journey in the GoTEN kids program wasn’t easy at first. When he first started attending, he would enter the room and immediately burst into tears. Everything felt unfamiliar, and the only way he knew to express himself was through crying. But our teachers, with patience and love, made him feel safe. They welcomed him, comforted him, and little by little, Hamza began to trust. Soon, the tears faded, replaced by laughter, play, and learning. Through stories, activities, and time with other kids, he started picking up social skills and even learning English words. The little boy who once clung to fear was now running into the room ready to play! And then, just a week ago, Hamza said his first English word. It was a simple moment—"Do you want some Cheerios?" Macie, our Kids Ministry director, asked. And without hesitation, Hamza responded: “Yes”. One small word, but one huge breakthrough. Macie was shocked. Overwhelmed with joy. It was a moment she will never forget, a moment that showed just how far Hamza had come.
But here’s the truth: Hamza’s "Yes" can start with yours. When you join The Grid, you’re saying “Yes” to creating a safe place where refugee kids like Hamza can belong. You’re saying “Yes” to equipping our kids ministry with the tools to help children learn, grow, and thrive. You’re even providing the Cheerios that make breakthrough moments possible. Without monthly supporters, there would be no space for kids like Hamza to feel seen and supported. No place for them to laugh, learn, and build the language foundation that will shape their future.
When you say “Yes”, you help make moments like Hamza’s possible. And this is just the beginning.
